Redbridge Birdwatching is moving home....

From 1st April 2011 this site is now closed.

But dont worry....Following the 'scare' of me shutting down the Redbridge Birdwatching project when I started up 'London Birdwatching'... many of you requested that the site remained running due to the local community feeling of the site and the ease of checking the daily sightings, I was joyfully convinced to keep it going...

However to grow this community resource further, (keeping it local and informative), and encouraging more interaction and participation, I am moving all the information over to the new site: http://www.redbridgebirdwatching.webs.com/

the new site allows more interaction.... and the formatting does not get corrupted! This site has become increasingly hard to manage and update as it frequently gets corrunpted.

The new site is farily empty at the moment, but the daily sightings pages will be updated THERE from today (March 31st 2011). Please go to the homepage, then click 'sightings'... and over the coming days and months ALL the information on the Bird Pages will also be moved accross.

Im certain you will like the changes, but please let me know what you think...

pr Greenfinch, plus the usual commoner birds (EBarnes)

Hainault:

a Clattering of 4 Jackdaws over this morning, and a Greenfinch in my garden (Eddie Barnes)

Roding Valley Park:

Redbridge Birdwatching guided walk from Woodford Bridge to the northern borough boundary (and back), starting with a Latte in the lovely new cafe at Redbridge Lakes:

pr Mute Swan on Redbridge Lakes, looking cosy but nest building is unconfirmed as yet

at least 2 pairs of Coot and Mallard there however, and a Moorhen, also c40 Starling (8Waxwing reported there last week by the owner

total of 16 Mallard, 3 Moorhen seen along the River

Grey Wagtail flew upriver, and 2 Kingfisher were flushed from a probable breeding ground near Ray Park. 1 was seen again on the wa back.

3 Little Egret all appeared to be 1st year birds, with dull pinkish yellow feet.

a Female Sparrowhawk was soaring above the scrubland

2 Great Spotted Woodpecker showed, and 2 Green Woodpecker were heard only.

4 Pheasant showed extremely well, one male within a yard of John Painter! (2male, 2 femal

Redbridge Birdwatching Walk to Five Oaks Lane (Sat 26th March)

Nine of us had a wonderful 2 and a half hour guided walk around Forest Farm on Five Oaks Lane, Chigwell. The hope was that we would have some good sightings of Yellowhammers.

at least 10 Meadow Pipit showed off nicely for us, doing their fancy flight displays.

There were also 4 singing skylarks on site. The surrounding farmland gave us a Pheasant and a few fly over Stock Dove. A Sparrowhawk displayed for us too.

4 Great Spotted Woodpeckers showed well, and a couple of Green Woodpeckers for good measure too. 7 singing Chiffchaffs, and at least 6 singing Song Thrush were great to hear.

Our target bird Yellowhammer did not disappoint, with excellent views, some birds flying to bushes very near where we were standing, and with at least 8 singing males, and 3 females we were all impressed with this colony.

While watching the Yellowhammers (and a lovely male Reed Bunting winging among them), a Red Kite appeared and circled our heads for a good few mins being mobbed by a Carrion Crow

He did not appear to fly off distantly, but probably remained local (2 were seen the previous day at Dagnam Park, nearby). When leaving the Red Kite, we were blessed by a very obliging Little Owl, and a flock of 10 Fieldfare and 5 Redwing were still on site.

On top of the other commoner birds and a few flyovers a great morning was had by all.. and even the text that came in about the Avocet up the road at Fairlop did not tempt us to flee the site as we were haveing such a productive morning... Next month we will be visiting the site again, and hope to be able to ADD: Whinchat, Wheatear, Swallow, House Martin, Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Cuckoo and Hobby to that number... make sure you book on!

Again much Nuthatch activity around the tree hole, one bird chasing off a blue tit. I didn't expect to find one of the pair in the bushes by the pond beside Ravensbourne Gardens, calling and collecting, and where I also saw both of the Reed Bunting pair (separately).

No waxwings when I first went by at 10:00, but flock of 13 Waxwing back in same tree at 11:00. I'm surprised at the fluctuating number and wonder how much longer they will be around. (Eddie Barnes)

17 of us met in Woodford Green at 8am to walk through Hatch Forest and Plain along the River Ching (and back) to census the birds in this very underwatched but lovely remnant of Epping Forest.

We clocked up 31 species, which is not bad for a woodland walk. The hightlights were 4 drumming Great Spotted Woodpeckers, a pair of Nuthatch, 2 singing Goldcrest, and a singing Treecreeper.
Some of us also had a quick sighting of 3 Waxwing the flew over the Plain.
The following counts were recorded: 1 Canada Goose (flying over), 1 Grey Heron (flying over), 2 Mallard (on the river Ching), 1 Common Gull and c20 Black Headed Gulls on a playing field, 20 Woodpigeon, 7 Stock Dove including a singing male, 2 Collared Doves, and a Feral Pigeon, 2 Green Woodpeckers and 4+ Great Spotted Woodpeckers drumming, 7 Wren, 11 Robin, a Dunnock, 6 Blackbird, 6 singing Song Thrush, 22 Blue Tit, 9 Great Tit, 10 Long tailed Tits including a pair nest building, 2 Nuthatch, 2 Treecreeper, 2 Goldcrest, 17 Magpie, 3 Carrion Crow, 4 Jackdaw (flying over), 3 Waxwing, 1 House Sparrow calling from a nearby street, 12 Jay, 13 Greenfinch, 2 Chaffinch and 5 Goldfinch.

A great time was had by all... and we were back at the cars with 10 mins to spare.

Claybury Park:

Spring has arrived (or it had this morning) in the shape of the first calling chiffchaff. Singing dunnock, green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers calling and drumming.
A pair of Nuthatch returning to a tree hole is an encouraging sign.
Seemed a lot of jays about today, and a jackdaw (uncommon in the park).
Oddly (after a good morning last Thursday when 5+ were seen) no treecreepers seen or heard today. (Eddie Barnes)

2 Water rail! I've never seen any before - I saw one and that was good and then lost sight of it but saw another about 20ft away. I thought there was a pair but hadn't seen them together so I waited for several minutes and was rewarded - they both came together. Then one made a lot of noise and left the other one quickly (attempted mating?)

GUIDED BIRDING WALK - HAINAULT FARM - THIS SATURDAY 10am

Will we find more than 2010's peak count of 27 singing skylarks?

I am hosting a guided birding walk on Hainault Farm from 10am-12midday this coming Saturday morning.

The farmland around Hainault is very under-birded, and we do not have much knowledge about what birdlife is present there... what we do know is that last year there were at least 27 singing male Skylarks!

Merlin, Buzzard, Kestrel, Meadow Pipit, Linnet, Stock Dove, Red Legged Partridge, Rook and Pheasant have all recently been recorded there too, and last Autumn Whinchat and Wheatear where present.

Please come along this Saturday morning at 10am for a fact-finding BIRDING WALK around the farmland between Hainault Road and Romford Road... I wonder what we will see?

The male and female look the same.
They are Anas Bahamensis known as Bahama Pintail, Bahama Teal, White-Cheeked Teal or White Cheeked Pintail.

These very attractive ornamental ducks were pinioned and released into Valentines Park in mid 2010

Garden Sightings: Today there were a pair of greater-spotted woodpeckers on the feeders and appeared to be drumming and displaying in the trees (let's hope for the patter of little beaks later in the year),
individual sightings and those of green woodpeckers are quite frequent.
A Grey heron is a regular fly over, seen most days.
We still get up to seven goldfinches regularly and two pairs of chaffinches.
Sightings of wrens are also becoming more frequent. (Eddie Barnes)

2 Goldcrest still in the garden (JohnCrick)

Roding Valley Park:

Roding Valley Park and surrounding area: 3 Jays, mixed flock of around a dozen Redwings and Song Thrushes, separate Song Thrush, Greenfinch, mixed flock of around 50 Common Gulls and Black-headed Gulls, 2 Mute Swans, 2 Long-tailed Tits, Siskin (Alan Hobson).

Valentines Park:

Mid afternoon: Little Grebe, 4 adult Mute Swan, Canada Goose, Mallard, Tufted Duck, 2m Pochard, Greylag Goose, 1m Shoveler, Coot, Moorhen, Common Gull, Blakc Headed Gull, Lesser Black Backed Gull, Feral Pigeon, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Pied Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, 2 Mistle Thrush, Blackbird, 15 Redwing, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, 9 Long Tailed Tit, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Jay, Starling, 11 House Sparrow in/along the Brisbane road hedges, 9 Chaffinch, 2 Greenfinch, 6 Siskin (cheers - Mike C)

Wanstead Flats:

possible Ring-billed Gull (west of Alex with C Gull. Looked much larger even though it was at the back of the flock, upright stance, heavier bill and not so cute looking as a common while not so menacing as Herring, thick black ring, streaked neck and back of the head. It reminded me of Rossi. Flew south and couldn't relocate it, not counted),
adult Mediterranean Gull a.m. (NC/JL/TH/BirdGuides) still at Alex after being flushed west by a dog,
singing Reed Bunting, 4 Chaffinch (2 singing), 3 singing Skylark, 4 Meadow Pipit, 2 Pied Wagtail, 4 singing Song Thrush, 7 Mistle Thrush, 11 Redwing, singing Blackbird, 2 Stock Dove, 12 Greylag Goose (3 NE), 8 Pochard, 19 Tufted Duck, 11 Shoveler, 12 Gadwall, 2 Egyptian Goose (1 imm, not the same as on the Park), Snipe (NC)

Wanstead Park:

Feb 11th - Wanstead Park: Siskin, 9 Goldfinch, 10+ Song Thrush (6 singers), singing Mistle Thrush, 65 Tufted Duck, 10 Pochard, 19 Gadwall, 6 Teal, 6 Shoveler, 2 Grey Heron, 5 Little Grebe, Stock Dove, Grey Wagtail, Coal Tit, 3 Goldcrest (NC)
